How SB Scraper Got Its Start

If you had an employee that came to you and said that he has an idea that will save you 30% or more of his time doing the job that he is doing for you, would you listen to him?

You would probably ask yourself some questions such as the two below.

First, how long has he been doing his job?

Second, does he really understand his job?

If the answer is he’s been doing the job for years, and understands the job, then you might say let’s see if he can actually make his suggestion work.

This brings us to the story behind one of our founders, Harvey Reyes, who once was that worker that had been on the job of heavy equipment operator for years and knew the tasks involved in his job as an operator and sought a piece of equipment that could improve it.

Harvey has been an operator for numerous companies and has been an owner operator for 20 years. During this time he kept thinking about how he could improve productivity in the use of the box scraper he operated. In his observation of the motor blade on his job he realized that it would be possible to develop a superior product that would do what the motor blade does and even more and came up with the SB Scraper. This piece of equipment resulted in greater productivity that made the bottom line more profitable.

If you had an employee come up with an improvement like this wouldn’t you be onboard with it?

Our History Timeline

Vision

SB Scraper intends to bring to market a revolutionary box scraper for use with large construction skip loaders. SB Scraper is a patented major improvement to traditional box scrapers whose design has been unchanged in over 30 years of use. The SB Scraper box enables a skip loader to perform traditional box grading/dirt collecting operations as well as to perform for the first time, true grading operations as currently performed by motor graders and the like. The SB Scraper is a revolutionary improvement to the box scraper and will enable SB Scraper customers to reduce site finish grading costs dramatically. The Company’s goal is to replace standard box scrapers with the SB Scraper in the skip loader market worldwide. Further the Company believes that the SB Scraper may provide enough new functionality to supported loader platforms to take market share from the small bulldozer market, the skid steer market, and even a small portion of the backhoe market.

Features Implemented

• Hydraulically operated side or “drift” panels which allow for true grading operation. Traditional box scrapers can grade dirt only until the box itself is full at which point the dirt must be dragged to a new location. The SB Scraper drift panels can be operated independently and opened or closed such that scraped dirt passes out of the box and thus create a wind row just like dedicated graders. This feature can be used on many jobs to completely obviate the need for a scraper thus greatly reducing actual construction costs but using one piece of equipment (the SB Scraper) where historically two pieces have been used (a skip loader with a box and a true grader).

• Pitch Angle: The SB Scraper allows 3 axis positioning of the entire box thus providing for all the axial movement usually associated only with dedicated grading equipment. This provides greatly added functionality for operators thus dramatically reducing grading time on hills, uneven grades, and small work areas.

• Side Shift: The entire box can be shifted outside the range of travel of the loader’s rear wheels. This allows the SB Scraper to get very close to existing structures such as walls and curbs, eliminating or reducing the need for manual work in these finish areas. In areas close to drop offs or ravines, the side shift provides added safety to the operator by allowing the grader itself to remain further from the drop off while still completing the grading operations.

• The rippers used by conventional box scrapers have been moved to the very back of the box, thus allowing the SB Scraper to make “rips” much closer to existing structures than seen in existing box scrapers. This saves hand labor cost by moving a lot more dirt out of areas close to walls, trees, curbs, etc.

• An optional Adjustment Shoe can be used to set an exact cut relative to a curb, gutter, or existing asphalt or concrete line. In conjunction with open drift panels, operators can make a single long cut at a precise height.
